In Stanzas of Freedom and Free Labor, Lowell and Harper use symbols to trigger public interest in the protest against slavery.

In "Stanzas on Freedom", the author uses the symbol of a chain. The chain is to symbolized how the slaves were held down.
The author in "Free Labor" uses the symbol of clothes to portray something that a slave had to make. They refused to wear something that was produced by a slave, which would be supporting slavery.
